Although Triumph has many great albums (Just A Game, Allied Forces, etc.), this is far and away their best, and shows Mr. Rik Emmett in a stage I would consider eclectic even for someone as versatile as he is. The songs that made it on the radio, including Spellbound and Follow Your Heart, are great songs to be sure, but let's look at a some of Thunder Seven's lesser-known and better tunes. In my opinion, the last three songs on the album are the best ones. Killing Time is a gorgeous and melodic tour-de-force full of delicious voice-leading and smooth chromaticism. Stranger In A Strange Land goes back and forth from funky to atmospheric and creates a mood I never tire of even after fifteen years. The longing, dreamy verse and pre-chorus is one of best I've ever heard. Last, but certainly not least, on the album is Little Boy Blues, a gorgeous, jazzy number which ranks in my top five instrumental tunes ever. I learned this note for note on my guitar long ago and it still gives me the chills. Few guitarists are capable of composing to such a level.Every song on Thunder Seven combines excellent musicianship with a mood that can't be found anywhere else. Rock Out Roll On, Time Goes By, Cool Down, Time Canon, and the excellent classical piece Midsummer's Daydream are all special to me in their own way, but I don't have the time to review them. This is truly one of the best rock albums ever and Mr. Emmett should be forever proud.
