Based on the short story The Sobbin Women by Stephen Vincent Benet, Seven Brides For Seven Brothers was brought to the silver screen by director Stanley Donen, with music by Adolph Deutsch, Saul Chaplin, Gene De Paul and Johnny Mercer. The key to the film s success, aside from the excellent musical score, was the unusual choreography that accompanied seemingly mundane everyday pursuits, such as chopping wood and raising a barn. Starring Howard Keel and Jane Powell, the film was nominated for five Academy Awards, winning one for the scoring of a musical picture.
