The 8th official studio album finds this underappreciated British band reinventing themselves once again. (Note: This is the 2nd self-titled album they’ve released this year, but the first one was a “Record Store Day” only release.) This time out they deliver dark, hypno-psychedelic drone rock that churns and drives with a mind-grabbing, tripped-out sound flow. There is a rhythmic confluence of haunting vocal mystery and tension-weighted, post-Motorik rock beats with strong guitar work. Chris Olley’s voice projects an arresting aura of desolation and danger. The music is warm and otherworldly, a bubbling cauldron of beckoning hallucinogenic (dis)comfort. These are songs from a place you aren’t supposed to go, presented with a confident resignation of experience and the power of survival. Sometimes recalls bits of Loop, Shriekback, Hair & Skin Trading Company, Hills. “Six By Seven” is an extremely listenable, original and creatively compelling album for total psychedelic immersion that will free you from the weight of the world.
