Description

Product Description Hip Hop: Featured on this album are an array of New York producers & MC's, including Godfather Don, DJ Spinna, Diamond D & Showbiz, Sadat X & Grand Puba, Golfinga X of the Wu & more. Amazon.com Originally released back in 1999, Seven Eyes, Seven Horns gives fans of cerebral rap another chance to enjoy the off-kilter style Scaramanga (a.k.a. Sir Menelik) established on Kool Keith's Dr. Octagon project. Combining an intricate, wordy flow with relentless delivery, Scaramanga wavers between kicking knowledge (the previously released "7XL" from Soundbombing II) and shameless hedonistic indulgence on "Strip Club Bait." The latter is almost entirely constructed of phone-tone blips, and the inventive sounds showcased on this album also include thumb-piano plucks on "Sugar 99." The overall sound, however, leans towards the sparsely arranged New York boom bap of the early '90s. Producers here include Godfather Don, whose smooth soundscapes provide a complimentary contrast to Scaramanga's complex verbal barrage. Scara's Wu-style stream of consciousness flow is certainly capable. But for those with limited attention spans, its lack of curveballs and change-ups detracts from his vivid lyricism, and an otherwise solid effort. --Del F. Cowie
