Seven by Sadiyah Bashir is a collection of poems that addresses intersectional identities as a Black Muslim woman. Bashir’s poems speak of multiple topics including racism, police brutality, and the honed brand of sexism that Black Muslim girls & women in particular go through.I quickly found many favorites and multiple poems that spoke to me, whether through nostalgia or pain. Some like “Project Buildings” made me feel an emotion that I couldn’t quite name. What is a word for something that makes you feel good, sad, seen, remorseful, and happy all at once. I have no word to engulf to my describe it except powerful.Seven for sure spoke to locked chambers in my soul. Black Muslim women everywhere will find this a welcomed addition to their shelf space.
